Community Supermarket

Providing affordable groceries and essentials for the Braintree community.

Welcome from Our Founder

Hear from our founder, Tina Town, about how the Braintree Community Supermarket was created to provide affordable shopping for everyone in our community.

Membership costs just £5 a year. Products are kept as cheap as possible — when you see an item, it will have a number on it. Add a zero and that’s the price!

A Place to Connect and Support One Another

At the Braintree Community Hub, our goal is to create a more connected, inclusive community. We work to reduce social isolation by offering support to individuals who may feel excluded, helping them feel part of society.

We also provide a safe space for people to meet and share ideas, and we provide a place for people to meet and share experiences.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our Community Supermarket.

Our membership is £5.00 per year. This membership allows you use of the community supermarket. You will be issued a membership card which is non-transferable and must be presented each time you use the facility.

You cannot shop without your membership card.
We will cancel your card but you will need to buy another membership, this is to prevent people abusing the system... Sorry!
Your membership gives you access to purchase our goods which are priced at up to 50% lower than other retail outlets. We will always drop our prices as low as we possibly can, we can't make a loss but we will never make a big profit.
You can come in everyday as long as you present your membership card, there are no restrictions!
In the community supermarket we give each item a number. This is to make the transactions in the supermarket easier as all you will need to do is add up the numbers and put a zero on the end. For example, if you have three items that add up to 53 then this would equate to £5.30
We aim to stock the basics, bread, milk, cheese, tinned goods, cleaning products and pet food but we won't necessarily be selling the top brands. We will buy in the goods that we can get at the best prices so you can get the best deal possible.
We know that for some, times are really hard. Our supermarket gives you the chance to shop at great prices, this means you don't have to rely on places like the Foodbank.
No, we are an inclusive organisation and we treat all equally so we do not want anyone to feel that they are having to use our services; we are open to everyone.
No, we have a strict rule that you need a card each as this is how we can be sustainable; if we find out this is happening we reserve the right to cancel your membership with immediate effect.
Absolutely! We will have a 'Pay it Forward' scheme running that we can offer support to those in need but we will be very careful who we issue it to.
